Most modifications will affect car insurance fees. Insurers could also use a modification as a method of avoiding payment if they were required to pay out, using it as a loophole.
Something as small as altering the colour of your vehicle (by respray or wrap) could increase car insurance prices, so it is worth letting your insurer know of any planned customisations. This is certainly the case if the mods are more extensive (e.g. a new body kit) as the insurer would claim that their cover only applies to the basic framework of the car.
Some modifications, such as anti-roll bars, could actually reduce the price of car insurance you pay. Again we suggest to reach out to your insurer for full details.
There are a few modifications that are illegal to possess in the UK and these are imposed to ensure greater safety for you and other drives on the road.
The more common illegal vehicle modifications are listed below:
- Headlight tints – Tinted front and rear headlights could be dangerous when driving at night due to reduced visibility.
- Window tints – Tints that are too dark make it difficult for the driver to see clearly.
- Loud exhausts – An exhaust cannot pass the limit of 74 decibels. Other custom exhaust mods, such as spitting flames, can also be illegal if they do not abide by regulations.
- Neon lights – Coloured puddle lights are illegal as they distract other drivers.
Bespoke is when an upgrade is made to a vehicle’s exterior or interior design that fits a unique specification. For example, flared wheel arches or carbon fibre trims that are custom made and not sold by the manufacturer are considered bespoke.
Typically the specification is planned by the customer and we will create and install the custom part, with the aid of industry suppliers.
