Unfortunately, accidents on the road take place every day in the UK. Whether it is down to poor driving or pedestrians being careless, there are driving tips that can be followed to improve your safety:
1. Even though laws have been put in place to eliminate the use of phones whilst driving, some of us are still guilty of using them to text or activate the hands free. As a result, our attention is elsewhere impairing our reaction time and putting our own and other’s lives at risk. Previous studies have shown that our chances of being involved in a road side accident is quadrupled and that our reaction time is similar to a driver under the influence of alcohol. Should you need to make a phone call, we strongly advise pulling over to a safe spot first!
2. The discomfort you may feel when getting into a hot car that’s been parked in the sun for a while can be a distraction while driving. Other than starting up the air conditioning in your vehicle, a quick and simple way to improve your car’s airflow is to first roll down the windows, walk to the other side of your car to open and close your door five to ten times. This technique helps to force the trapped hot air out of the car and can actually reduce the interior temperature by as much as 10 degrees.
3. Similarly to using a mobile phone whilst driving, eating and drinking can also cause you to take your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel and mind away from driving. Particularly, if you drop your food, not only does this create unnecessary mess but you also become even more distracted and have even less control of the car.
4. Have you ever thought it was a good idea to drive to your holiday destination as opposed to getting a plane? Well it is, if you decide to take breaks, particularly when travelling over a long distance! We recommend making the most of your journey by stopping off every now and then, as tiredness can really impact our concentration on the roads and could leave you requiring a vehicle repair if you are not careful. So if that means stopping off for one or two nights, so be it, the long break away will be worth it in the end!
